drive
One of the best movies of the century (okay, thats only my opinion). But it is really great. It's unique, raw, nostalgic (it reminds me a bit of another classic: American Gigolo) and so many other things. It is directed by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn. The ethereal electronic-pop music, mainly by Cliff Martinez, is exactly right. The whole thing has an awesome 80ies feeling to it. I won't make this a tribute page about drive, there's already a lot being said about Drive too. But seriously it's worth a watch (or two)!

American Gigolo
Last week i finally was able to watch a golden oldie: American Gigolo.
In this film Richard Gere makes his debut as an actor. But that's not why it was on my 'one to watch' list. It represents it's timeframe very well: staying in shape, the social importance of the club scene, rising technology, shoulder pads, wrap dresses, high waists, loose fitted shirts and tops, close-fitting trousers, the importance of brand names and well power dressing in general.
If you look closely, you'll see so much similarity to our modern-day society, and that's not only the case when it comes to fashion.
As you may know the 2000s were a decade where the social and emotional aspect was very important. The 80s however were a decade where the rational and individual aspect were important. Society reified, people were ambitious, society's hero was the person who helped himself. This had everything to do with the threat of a potential war, crisis and unemployment...sounds familiar doesn't it?
Enjoy and have a great weekend y'all!
Some music from American Gigolo, by Blondie to get in the mood:

Into the wild
Into the Wild - Sean Penn
Last night i deceided it was finally time to watch 'Into the wild'.
Into the wild, a film by Sean Penn is about a young man, an American hitchhiker, that hiked into the Alaskan wilderness. It is based on a true story. The story of Christopher McCandless. When Chris turned 22 and graduated from college, he deceided he did not wanted to be a part of organized society and called pursuing a career a '20th century invention'. Christopher was influenced by writers like Jack London, Henry David Thoreau and Leo Tolstoy.
It made me, once again, think about life, society and happiness.
A part from the story being absolutely breathtaking, the film was so well directed...it opens your heart up to all the beauty there is to see in the world. So i just wanted to share some of the film's lovely stills with you.
To conclude:
“Freethinkers are those who are willing to use their minds without prejudice and without fearing to understand things that clash with their own customs, privileges, or beliefs. This state of mind is not common, but it is essential for right thinking;” - Leo Tolstoy
