Craquer la peau    - spring 2011

‘Book of inspirations’ is an assignment for AMFI (Amsterdam Fashion Institute). The book of inspirations is a book that contains stuff from all sorts of sources. It contains everything that inspires you as a fashion student: design, the industry itself and fashion as an identity. As a result I put together a book that reflects me as a person and my inspirations in both text and image.

Intro from:‘Craquer la peau’

To rise from the deepest darkness and find hope. By believing in yourself and in others love will conquer and eventually reveal the divineness of humankind.

The reason I chose this font is that I grew up loving the magic a typewriter seems to contain. When I was a kid, I used to spend a lot of time writing on this magical machine. You can’t erase what you write: it becomes indelible. Your actions become definitive. For me this is what life is all about. Whatever you choose to do in life, you will leave a trail behind. That is my goal: to leave a trail and to live my own legend, just like Paulo Coelho explained in ‘The Alchemist’.

Besides the indelible qualities of a typewriter, this font also represents antiquity, which is the base for the entire book. To reflect its content I’ve used an old book, since you can’t fake the aging process. Aging is a privilege only old objects have. This antiquity shows throughout the whole book (in use of paper & in the use of images).
But because life isn’t about only about nostalgia I’ve divided the book into a couple of chapters. Starting from despair, to hope, faith, love and finally divinity. Gradually the book contains more use of color and more up-to-date images. The three themes faith, hope and love have a special place in my heart. They symbolize my youth and the way I was brought up. But they also represent the darker periods of my life.
‘And now abide, faith, hope, love,
these three but the greatest of these is love’

The book is a quite literal search to divinity within humankind, the thing that makes humans extraordinary and superhuman. This can be a spark of hope, a warm and comforting smile or a passion.
My true inspiration for this theme came after visiting the show “Craquer la peau” from the ‘Scapinoballet’ a ballet group in the Netherlands. ‘Craquer la peau’ means ‘the golden coat or literally ‘cracked skin’. I knew right away that this show really inspired me, but it took some time before I could give meaning to this inspiration and finally translate it into this book.

‘And now abide, faith, hope, love,
these three but the greatest of these is love’
